Highway 1148
Date: Sunday 5th February 2012Highway 1148 is widely regarded as the ultimate motorcycling highway in Thailand. It runs from Chiang Kham (80 kms east of Phayao) through to Tha Wang Pha – the intersection of Highway 1080, approximately 30 kms south of Pua.
In the 160 kms there’s an endless succession of stunning vistas, hairpins and roller-coaster sections, and some extremely steep and mountainous terrain.
Ban Bo Klua or "salt mine village" is located deep in the mountains of Nan, at the bottom of a valley where Highway 1256 and 1081 intersect. Salt water is extracted from wells in the village, and evaporated off to produce salt, traded here for centuries.
Doi Phukha National Park is located north of Nan city. The highest peak - Doi Phukha - is 1,980 metres (6,600ft) high. Northern Thailand’s largest national park (1,704 km2) has an abundance of limestone caves, karsts, waterfalls and fossils.
