The guesthouses and hotels downtown are within 20 minutes walk from the bus station, and within walking distance of Nan’s major sights. The guesthouses in the upper part of the city may have a more tranquil atmosphere, but their remote location requires a bicycle or motorbike rental if you want to spend time downtown. Ban Bo Klua or "salt mine village" is located deep in the mountains of Nan, at the bottom of a valley where Highway 1256 and 1081 intersect. Salt water is extracted from wells in the village, and evaporated off to produce salt, traded here for centuries.
Doi Phukha National Park is located north of Nan city. The highest peak - Doi Phukha - is 1,980 metres (6,600ft) high. Northern Thailand’s largest national park (1,704 km2) has an abundance of limestone caves, karsts, waterfalls and fossils.
