Nan is both a province and a city in northern Thailand and is located in the lush Nan river valley, some 320 kms east of Chiang Mai. A quiet province, well off the usual tourist pathways and enclosed by forested mountains, it provides an 11,500 sq. km window into rural Thailand's heartland.

Doi Phu Kha - 2079 metres - is the highest mountain, located north-east of Nan city in Amphoe Pua, towards the Laos border.

For centuries Nan was an independent kingdom but, due to its remoteness, had few connections to the outside world.

Ban Bo Klua Salt Mine

Ban Bo Klua Salt Mine Ban Bo Klua or "salt mine village" is located deep in the mountains of Nan, at the bottom of a valley where Highway 1256 and 1081 intersect. Salt water is extracted from wells in the village, and evaporated off to produce salt, traded here for centuries.

Doi Phu Kha National Park

Doi Phu Kha National ParkDoi Phukha National Park is located north of Nan city. The highest peak - Doi Phukha - is 1,980 metres (6,600ft) high. Northern Thailand’s largest national park (1,704 km2) has an abundance of limestone caves, karsts, waterfalls and fossils.
